Yesterday I went for afternoon tea at Dean Street Townhouse with two of my favourite lady friends. I love love love afternoon tea. It always feels deliciously decadent drinking bubbles and eating cake smack-bang in the middle of the day. Dean Street Townhouse is the perfect setting for such an occasion, located in the beating heart of Soho it has quite a naughty past!

In the roaring 20s it was the legendary ‘Gargoyle Club’ a private (and rumoured to be quite debauched) members club founded at the top of what was then No.69 Dean Street (with that address how could it have been anything BUT naughty!) and Fred is Astaire rumoured to have been a regular. In the 1950’s Dean Street Townhouse was a drinking den and artists hang-out frequented by the likes of Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. It closed in the late 70s and has since been a snooker club, nightclub and even a men’s massage parlour. Oh if only walls could talk!

Re-opening in 2009 current owners, the Soho House Group, have paid homage to its artistic and devilish history with a collection of art from renowned and upcoming artists displayed in the dining room, a smattering of cheeky touches (more of those later) throughout and decor that fuses the past with the present. It’s all low lighting, red leather banquettes and sumptuous velvet seating just crying out for you to sink into with a martini. As soon as I walked in I knew that yep I could happily spend my whole afternoon here getting incredibly, embarrassingly sloshed. It just has that feeling about it. Which is no bad thing.

As the reason for our visit was a double Birthday celebration we decided to go all out and had a fantastic time toasting ourselves with plenty of bottles of the fizzy stuff, setting the world to rights, cackling about unrepeatable things and gorging on sandwiches, scotch eggs and cake.

After a fair few hours it was time to head home and en route out the door I bumped into another friend who after asking how our scones had been, conspiratorially whispered “have you seen the wallpaper?” Thinking she was completely off her rocker I said that yes I had and wasn’t it lovely. And made to walk away. Dragging me by the hand she took me to have an up-close, and as it turned out, quite personal look and I’m immensely grateful to her that she did! What at first glance look like beautiful blooming flowers creating the pretty wallpaper pattern turn out to be in fact, beautiful blooming …. lady flowers!

Designed by Jonathan Yeo it’s just one of many fantastic and naughty details that add to the feeling of being ensconced in a glamorous den of iniquity. Dean Street Townhouse really is the perfect destination to top up (they have an extensive and I’m told, absolutely cracking Bloody Mary menu) or to wind down. I’ll definitely be back ready to make an afternoon and hopefully evening of it too.
